Lionel Messi continues to receive accolades. At 37 years old, he delivered a standout performance in the 6-0 victory over Bolivia, contributing two assists and scoring three goals, marking his tenth hat-trick for Argentina.
With his 112 goals for the Albiceleste (189 matches), Messi is now the second highest scorer for national teams, surpassing the Iranian Ali Daei (109) and closing in on Cristiano Ronaldo (133).
And it seems that the Flea still has a long way to go, as he confirmed at the conclusion of the international match.
Looking ahead to the 2026 World Cup
Asked if he sees himself playing in the 2026 World Cup, where his team will defend its title, Messi acknowledged:
“Honestly, I haven’t set a date or deadline. I’m just enjoying all of this. I’m more excited than ever to be here and feel the affection of the people. I just have to finish the year and do a good preseason for the next one. I want to take it step by step and enjoy every day.”
The attacker also admitted: “I’m happy with my teammate. Despite my age, when I’m here I look like a kid because of the stupid things I do. I feel very comfortable with this team. As long as I feel good, see that I can help the team and perform the way I want, I’ll continue to enjoy it.”
“It’s great to come here, to feel the affection, to hear my name being sung… I love playing in Argentina. There’s a great connection with the people” added the Argentine international before finishing.
The national team has been playing this way for a long time. There are a lot of people who feel comfortable playing between the lines.” as stated by ESPN.
