Alvaro Carreras: The Next Big Battle Between Real Madrid and Barcelona

Manchester United are considering exercising their buyback option on Alvaro Carreras, a full-back who is having a remarkable start to the season with Benfica. The youngster has recently been linked with Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.

A year after parting ways with Alejandro Grimaldo, one of their most dependable players in recent years, Benfica has finally secured a reliable replacement. Álvaro Carreras, who spent his first year adjusting, has quickly become the new leader of the right side of the defense.

As is often the case, his performances have caught the attention of top clubs. In fact, a report from Sport confirmed yesterday that the young Galician player, who is just 21 years old, is now on the radar of the two giants of the Spanish League: Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.

In today’s edition, the newspaper O Jogo revisits this topic and notes that the Spanish clubs may face stiff competition from Manchester United, where the winger had previously played after leaving the Real Madrid youth academy. However, despite progressing through their youth ranks and going on several loans, he never got the chance to feature for the first team.

After a year on loan, the Red Devils agreed to a permanent transfer last summer for around €6 million, but they retained a buyback option that they could activate now. If they choose to do so, Carreras’ return to Spain would likely become very challenging.
